Why Pragmatic Web3 exists

There is no shortage of material on blockchain, AI and everything downstream of them. There is a shortage of material that explains the reasoning: what problem the design was answering, what it costs, and the conditions under which it is the wrong choice.

Most explanations skip that, because it is the harder half and because it makes the subject sound smaller than the headline does. The result is a lot of people who can define the terms and cannot decide anything with them.

This site takes the opposite position. Every topic is put through the same five questions, and the last two matter as much as the first three. If a technology does not hold up under them, that is worth knowing before you build on it.

What we believe

  • A definition is not an explanation.

    Knowing that a blockchain is a distributed ledger tells you nothing you can act on. Knowing which problem forced that design tells you when to reach for it and when not to.

  • The limits are part of the subject.

    Any explanation that never says where a technology stops working is selling something. The boundary is the most useful part of the map.

  • Mechanism over vocabulary.

    Fluency in the terminology is easy to fake and easy to acquire. Understanding the mechanism underneath transfers to the next system, and the one after that.

  • Nothing is oversold.

    No revolutions, no disruption, no claims that a technology changes everything. Precise language about what something does, at what cost.

  1. 01

    Start from what was broken

    Every explanation opens on the problem that existed before the technology did. Without it, the design looks arbitrary.

  2. 02

    Build the mechanism up

    Each piece is introduced when it becomes necessary, not as a list of components to memorise in advance.

  3. 03

    Name the trade

    Every design decision costs something. The cost is stated plainly, in the same breath as the benefit.

  4. 04

    Say where it does not fit

    Each piece ends with the cases where something simpler wins. That is the Pragmatic Perspective, and it closes everything published here.
